Different types of heat pumps

What does a heat pump do? It is a machine that has been designed for cooling or heating. It captures energy from one area and transfers it to another area, thus, modulating the temperature as suited. There are many different types of heat pumps. The categorization is essentially made on the basis of the source from where the heat is consumed. One of these is the geothermal heat pump. It is one of the best alternatives to the regular heating pumps. This kind of a pump takes the heat from the ground.

In the geothermal pump, many coils are buried in the ground. These coils work to extract the heat from the earth and transfer it to some other receiver. The other kind of pump is the air source heat pump. In this, the energy is consumed from the air itself. In case of most air source pumps, when the temperature of the air falls below thirty eight degree Celsius, the pump ceases to work. Thus, an external supply of energy is needed. It is for this reason itself that air source heat pump consumes more electricity than any other kind of heat pump. However, with innovations, new kinds of air source pump are available which are cost and energy effective.
